I had strayed from the fold. For many, many years, I hardly ever wrote about Cline Dion. I white converse don know exactly why. For the first half of the I used to joke but it wasn really a joke that I had white converse a part time job writing about Quebec most famous chanteuse.

At the time, she was just crossing over to the international English pop world and taking said world by storm, and I was there to chronicle it. I wrote features on the songbird from Charlemagne in music biz w white converse eekly The Record, The Gazette, Chatelaine and the Financial Post.

Then nothing. Partly it was because the Dion camp, led by her manager Ren Anglil, was not too enthused about the Gazette coverage of his star, and partly it was because I tend not to like writing the same story over and over again.

So this featureon Dion in Saturday Gazette is a big deal it a big deal for me just because it marks the first time I spoke to Dion at length since the mid and it also big for the Gaz the paper hasn had a real proper feature on Dion in nearly two decades.

It was funny talking to Dion that day a couple of weeks back. I sensed a slight defensiveness on the part of the diva as if she felt I was set to pounce. At one point, I told her I thought the TV special Celine: 3 Boys and a New Show was interesting, and she challenged me, thinking I was covertly insulting the show. When I said many took great pleasure in dissing her, she asked me to cite an example.

The funny thing is that I am NOT one of the Cline haters. Never have been. Sure it not my musical bag you all know I much closer to Blitzkrieg Bop than My Heart Will Go On. But I always admired her determination and I like the fact that she is so much an embodiment of Quebec showbiz traditions.

Earlier this week, with crazy amounts of folks the globe clicking on my Dion blogs, I joked that I was changing the name of the blog to Show Biz Chez Cline. That was, alas, a joke. And I promise this is the last Dion blog post to white converse day.

Flight attendants fight to make knife ban permanent

Under pressure from lawmakers and flight attendants, the Transportation Security Administration backed off last year on a plan to allow knives on commercial planes.

But flight attendants want to make sure that the ban that began after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks stays in place indefinitely. The Assn. of Flight Attendants is backing a bill to prevent the TSA from ever lifting the ban.

“A permanent ban would ensure that we never again have to fight this common sense issue,” said Corey Caldwell, a spokeswoman for the association, which represents about 60,000 flight attendants.

A TSA spokesman declined to comment on the bill and would not speculate on future changes to the knife ban.

“The administration reversed its earlier decision and nothing has changed,” said TSA spokesman David Castelveter.

Return of the start button and 15 other things you need to know about the free download a year in the making

LOS ANGELES Microsoft released its long awaited Windows 8.1 upgrade as a free download Thursday. It addresses some of the gripes people have had with Windows 8, the dramatically different operating system that attempts to bridge the divide between tablets and PCs.

Windows 8.1 still features the dual worlds that Windows 8 created when it came out last October. On one hand, it features a touch enabled tile interface resembling what’s found in tablet computers. On the other, there’s the old desktop mode where the keyboard and mouse still reign. The update adds some new finger and gesture friendly shortcuts for touch based apps, while restoring some respect for the desktop mode that a billion PC users have become accustomed to.

The release comes as sales of traditional desktop and laptop computers continue to decline because consumers are spending money instead on the latest smartphones and tablets. It also comes at a time of transition for Microsoft as the Redmond, Wash., company focuses on devices and services, not just software. Earlier this month, Microsoft struck a deal to acquire Nokia’s phone business and patent rights for more than $7 billion. Microsoft is also searching for a new CEO to replace Steven A. Ballmer, who announced last month that he plans to retire within the next year.

The Window 8.1 update is free for current owners of Windows 8. Thursday in New York, which corresponded to the start of Friday in New Zealand. Simply go to the Windows Store app to find it. It may take a few hours for updates to reach everyone. Computers with Windows 8.1 already installed will go on sale Friday local time. That’s also when people will be able to buy stand alone copies of Windows 8.1.

The changes range from the cosmetic to improved functionality:

START ME UP The Start button is back in desktop mode, although not the way it was before Windows 8 came along. In Windows 7 and before, a click on Start would have brought up programs and important folders in a list. Now, one tap on Start flips you back to the new tile interface, where you can click or tap tiles to open programs. A long press brings up crucial settings such as the Control Panel.

BOOT TO DESKTOP You can now start up the machine in desktop mode, bypassing the tiles for a short time. That removes some of the headache for companies that want to use Windows 8 but don’t want to buy a touch screen monitor for every employee.

ONSCREEN KEYBOARD SWIPES The onscreen keyboard now includes the ability to type numbers or punctuation marks by swiping up or away from certain keys on the standard “QWERTY” layout, eliminating the need to toggle between numeric and alphabetic layouts. You can als white converse o select from suggested words mid stream using side swipes and taps on the virtual spacebar.

GESTURE ENABLED APPS You can now wave in the air in front of the front facing camera to get a response. For example, in the new app Bing Food Drink, a right to left wave in “Hands Free Mode” flips through pages of a recipe.

QUICKER TILE ORGANIZING You can tap and hold Windows tiles with your finger to move them. Another couple taps will allow you to resize them in one of four sizes. In the previous version, you had to go back to the mouse or touchpad and right click on tiles to do this, and you were limited to two sizes.

EASIER APPS ACCESS Finding all your apps takes just a swipe up on your start screen, as long as you don’t do it from beyond the bottom edge. Before, you had to swipe up from the bottom edge, then tap on the All Apps button.

AUTOMATIC UPDATES Apps update in the background, replacing the constant reminders to go to the Windows Store to update the apps yourself.

SMALLER TABLETS Windows 8.1 now has a home screen that looks good in portrait mode on screens measuring 7 inches to 8 inches diagonally.

LOCK SCREEN ACCESS You can now answer Skype calls or take photos from the lock screen without having to log in. Just swipe down. You can also set other apps like Twitter to send notifications when the screen is locked.

BETTER MULTITASKING In Windows 8.1, you can run up to four apps at once side by side, double the previous amount, though you need a large, high resolution monitor to do so (On their own, Microsoft’s Surface tablets are not big enough for more than two). You can resize panes using a slider that moves side to side, instead of being limited to one larger window and one slender one. This is still not as capable as Windows 7 or in desktop mode, where you can open dozens of items in windows that can be resized horizontally, vertically and diagonally. And many app makers have yet to adapt, meaning some apps still appear as a thin sliver, even if you want them to take up half the screen.

GLOBAL SEARCH Typing while on the tile based start screen will pull up multiple search results if applicable from your computer, the Web and the Windows app store. If you’re searching for a musician, you’ll see a list of popular songs you can play using Xbox Music, and if it’s someone famous (like President Barack Obama) you’ll see biographical details, videos and other information. Before, you had to ch white converse oose where to search: in apps, settings, computer files or on the Internet.

EMAIL UPDATE The standard issue Mail app now has a “power pane” on left hand side with folders for updates from social networks like Facebook, messages f white converse rom favourite contacts and newsletters. A new “sweep” command deletes multiple messages with a couple taps.

BETTER BROWSING No longer are you limited to 10 open tabs in the tile version of Internet Explorer. Before, Web pages automatically closed without prompts when you try to open more. You can open as many as you want now. Better yet, you can have two different websites displayed side by side, the way you’ve long been able to before Windows 8 came along.

XBOX MUSIC REFRESH The music streaming app now optimizes playback over discovery with a layout that has more lists and smaller photos. It also adds the ability to create playlists from any website with a couple taps. When on a website featuring artists, swipe in from the right edge and tap the Share button followed by the Music button. It will create a song playlist based on those artists, which you can then stream for free.

PICTURE EDITING A picture editor with pre set effects comes with the update, allowing for photo touchups, cropping, contrast changes and other features.

XBOX ONE INTEGRATION You can pick up where you left off if you start playing a video purchased on Xbox Video on a tablet and then watch the rest on Microsoft’s upcoming game console, Xbox One.

Return of the ‘bum bags’

Frankly, when the phrase first cropped up in conversation, I thought it was some dreadful new term to arise out of 21st century warfare. But, no white converse , apparently not ‘It’s what girls wear to keep their money safe at festivals or raves,’ says my teenage i white converse nformant. ‘Though sad middle aged people are buying them now you know, the kind in their thirties who go to stay in expensive designer tepees at Glastonbury, in the tragic belief that they’re still young.’ She speaks in the weary tones of an 18 year old whose territory at Topshop has been hijacked by frantically energetic fortysomethings; though she is equally scathing about luxury label across the body bags. ‘They are so WAG,’ says the teenage informant.

‘Or like someone pretending to be Sarah Jessica Parker in Sex and the City, but in a bad episode where it’s all a bit embarrassing.’Of course, you don’t need to make adult fashion decisions based on the advice of a teenager; and, anyway, as my informant grudgingly admits, if you buy a practical version, they’re useful for travelling (whether or not you’re on a gap year).

In my youth, several centuries ago, we called them ‘bum bags’ a description that carries with it a warning of their potential to be decidedly unflatt white converse ering and even longer ago I used to wear an earlier, more streamlined equivalent to school. Now, I’d actually like one of those money belts again: it was made of a robust navy blue ribbed elastic with a clasp at the front, and a hidden zip at the side for cash (a few shillings for lunch and buses, back in the day).

The teenage informant says the only acceptable non teenager who can get away with an across the body bag is Cheryl Cole. But I think a white converse nyone could wear a sturdy school uniform money belt, if only they were still available at John Lewis.

Indeed, the more I think about it, the more I long for the comforting certainties of an old fashioned school outfitter: not just elastic belts, but grey merino wool V neck jumpers, white cotton shirts and absolutely no acrylic skirts. And you know what? They’d look as good on a stern great aunt as when she was sweet 16

A runner with 100 marathons under his belt, Webb and scores of other racers gathered at the corner of Berkeley Street and St. James Avenue, a few blocks from the finish line. Some runners had left extra pairs of sneakers, warm ups, towels. Others left behind keys, wallets, and cellphones.

A portion of Berkeley Street was blocked off, as thousands of yellow bags with runners numbers affixed to them were stacked like sandbags.

As a Marathon official handed Dana Krashin her bag and placed a medal around her neck, the 35 year old Framingham native folded over in tears. She and her family have been coming to the Marathon for years, lining up along the route and cheering on participants. But this year, she ran.

think that so many Marathon spectators were hurt makes me really sad, Krashin said, weeping. sounds silly, but I a Marathon spectator. That was my favorite part of the race. The Boston Marathon has been the best spectator sport ever.

Most of the runners interviewed Tuesday were on the route and close to finishing when they heard about the explosions. Just as they prepared to launch into the final stretch, the race was abruptly halted, sending runners and spectators into chaos.

feel very, very sad, but also incredibly impressed by the kindness of all the people, said Teresa Bolick, 60, of Westford, who ran the race with her sister Jan Bolick of North Carolina.

What followed was a frantic search for families, phone calls that went unanswered, and finally, happy reunions. Three people lost their lives and more than 170 were wounded.

Francesco Iacovelli, 45, of Rome, had finished the race in just over three hours and was getting medical help for severe cramping when he heard the explosions, which he thought sounded like a thunderstorm.
