OBJECTIVE: Critically ill neonates frequently require multiple small volume red blood cell (RBC) transfusions. RBC units assigned to individual infants, used sequentially in small aliquo converse uk ts until the original expiration date, can substantially reduce donor exposures. We surveyed the safety and efficacy of using AS 3 split packs, stored up to 35 days, for premature infants.

Following a 7 ml/kg RBC converse uk transfusion, mean rise in hematocrit (hct) was 0.04, regardless of the age of the unit, mean change in serum potassium was 0.16 mmol/l and mean change in total bilirubin was +1.86 mol/l. The posttransfusion hct was not reduced with the use of the older red cell packs.

CONCLUSION: Designated AS 3 split RBC packs effectively limit donor exposures, can safely be used for neonatal small volume transfusions, and give a constant transfusion effect after up to 35 days of storage.

Marks and Spencer have been praised by Environment Secretary Richard Lochhead for their policy in reducing the number of single use plastic bags used by their customers.

From today Marks and Spencer will charge 5 pence for every single use carrier bag with the profits going to environmental charities.

Mr Lochhead said:

“This is an excellent example of how a retailer can help cut down the number of single use carrier bags converse uk by its customers and I congratulate Marks and Spencer on their forward thinking. Dr. Patrick Webb is a food expert with over 20 years of experience as a consultant to USAID, the World Bank, the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization, among other institutions. Webb is a dean at Tufts University and a professor at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy. He spoke with Deutsche Welle about the challenges surrounding food and water allocation in the future.

DEUTSCHE WELLE: According to a UN report released this week, the world’s seven billionth person will be born in October, 2011. Can we feed this many people?Patrick Webb: Yes, we can. It’s all about allocation of resources. In the past, people have said that there’s enough food in the world to feed everyone if we split it equitably. Would you agree?

We are perilously close to chaos, but it’s chaos in the way that we saw in 2007 and 2008, where failed harvests in Ukraine, Australia and Argentina were coupled with the rising price of oil. It’s a harvest failure coupled with other problems in the world leading to higher prices. But, again, the answer isn’t just to grow more food. Is this going to come at the expense of the world’s poorest people?Yes in the sense that the world’s diets are changing. This actually reflects one of the big paradoxes in the whole development agenda. The more successful we are at reducing poverty, the more we are faced with the problem of dietary change, which imposes stresses on the food system.

What I mean by dietary change is that the moment poor people have a little more in converse uk come, they don’t just eat a little bit more of what they were already eating. Instead, they eat better and shift to oils, fats, dairy products, meats and so on. Producing those kinds of foods is more demanding of water resources and spaces for agriculture and livestock. What’s the most pressing problem that needs to be addressed in terms of the link between the environment and food security?They’re equally pressing, bu converse uk t I think in about a decade from now, we will probably not talk about food security without adding water to the same phrase they are inextricably linked. One somewhat flippant response would be that most conventional farms in developing countries are organic by definition because most farmers in Africa, for example, don’t use inorganic fertilizer and don’t use genetically modified crops. They use traditional methods, seeds and manure converse uk instead of fertilizer. But their yields, frankly, are very, very low. Different techniques and approaches will do better in different contexts, depending on the soils and the climates, but I think we should be seeking incremental change. One of the reasons that urban areas are now overtaking rural is because people are leaving the land.

2. We have a sweet tooth for salty snacks. As two busy commuters and hummus enthusiasts, we went through about a bag of chips per week. Pictured below are the oddly beautiful 56 chip bags we extricated from our annual accrual.

3. Our communities need more local bakers! It looked like by far the bulk of the volume we created (when uncompressed) was bread bags. We didn have the time to bake our own and we did not want to go bread less. Try as we might, we could not find a good, local bread source were we could pick up our bread plastic free.

4. There is SO much we can do to reduce our plastic footprint! This year weinvested in stainless steel ice trays, bamboo utensils, glass straws, soap nuts, Glasslock tupperware, and Cuppows. I sewed homemade produce bags and napkins that we wash and reuse. We now dilute our dish soap and prolong the life of one bottle for months longer than we formerly could. We quit (resulting in by far our most popular post of the year, check it out here) and now use baking soda and vinegar to wash our hair. We made our own household cleaners and soy milk, and grew vegetables in our garden. This project was an inspirational catalyst for change, and we are excited to keep up these plastic reducing habits and keep searching for ways to support local businesses that promote a zero waste lifestyle. This may be the end of our plastic hoarding, but it is just a part of our lifelong learning journey. Cheers, may the adventure continue!

This month I investigated where is when I throw items in a local trash bin. It turns out that they get trucked to the Southeastern Massachusetts Resource Recovery Facility SEMASS waste to energy facili converse uk ty in West Wareham run by Covanta Energy.

On November 22, 2013 I met Patti Howard to get a private tour of the SEMASS facility. Patti greeted me with a firm handshake and a big smile. She has been working at SEMASS for 20 years, first as an accountant and now, because she is a “people person”, as a MSP program coordinator giving tours and presentations about the benefits of incineration. As she gave me an introduction to the facility it was obvious that we were getting into controversial territory. A woman clearly accustomed to conflict, Patti started by admitting that waste to energy facilities are not popular with everyone, but she stressed that people need to “have all the facts” before making judgments about it. She consistently tended towards defensiveness and chose her words deliberately throughout the tour. Shespoke with a firm conviction that we need to reduce our waste coupled with a harsh realism about the amount of trash we currently produce. She said that they Covanta sees trash as a resource and that it is much better to incinerate it than put it in a landfill. When my trash arrives at SEMASS it is dumped onto the “tipping floor”, an expansive room that holds mountains of trash that are inspected for hazardous materials (like propane tanks) and where most ferrous metals are removed with magnets to be recycled. At this point Patti noted with pride that SEMASS is the “largest recycler of metal in Massachusetts”, recovering nearly 40,000 tons of ferrous and non ferrous metals every year

SEMASS currently combusts over a million tons of waste a year, providing 25% of the “renewable energy” in Massachusetts. The facility qualifies as a Class II renewable energy source, giving 50% of its renewable energy credit value to boost local recycling programs. They are able to produce just under 600,000 megawats a year, or enough to power 75,000 homes. But is this the “clean, renewable energy” that Covanta claims it to be?

One of the challenges of incineration is pollution. Even the fanciest modern incinerators send CO2 and supertoxins like dioxins and furans into the air. They liberate toxins bound up in our industrial and municipal waste and release them into the air and water. This inevitably includes chemicals that have been linked to cancer, birth defects, and developmental, endocrinological, neurological, circularoty and reproductive problems. Combustion can even create new toxins that were not in the original waste, like dioxins that are created when items containing chlorine are burned. Globally, incinerators are the leading sou converse uk rce of dioxins.

Incinerating does not make waste disappear, it produces ash. “In general, for every 3 tons of waste one shoves into an incinerator we get one ton of ash that requires landfilling” (Annie Leonard The Story of Stuff,2010, p. 424). The ash is more toxic than the original waste, containing concentrated heavy metals and pollutants. About 1/3 of the SEAMASS facility is devoted to processing the ash, and their emissions of heavy metals and other pollutants consistently measure 60 90% below EPA limits. To avoid groundwater contamination SEMASS collects rainwater in three onsite ponds and has a water treatment plant on site. They also utilize local landfill leachate to meet almost 30% of its water needs and conserve roughly 40 million gallons per year of groundwater resources.

Covanta boasts that this ash can be used as landfill cover and does not emit methane like decomposing landfill waste. It has potential to be used as a building material but has not been approved by the state of Massachusetts. It sounded like regulations on incinerators in Massachusetts are stringent and that Covanta was making a sizable effort to “green” their business, but as my nostrils protested the nauseating decomposition and chemical smells throughout the facility I thought it was a stretch to call this energy “clean”. When I asked Patti if the workers at SEAMASS showed physical effects from working at SEAMASS she assured me that HEPA masks were used when appropriate and that high risk workers were tested multiple times a year for negative health effects. If our communities were to shift our focus away from toxin releasing incinerators and towards zero waste programs we could create more jobs. “For every dollar invested in recycling ad zero waste programs, we get ten times as many jobs as in incineration” (Annie Leonard, The Story of Stuff,2010, p. 429). Not only are there more jobs, these jobs are also cleaner and safer jobs that help conserve resources and create a more long term solution.

I also think that it is a stretch to call this energy renewable. Ultimately, they depend on fossil fuels and trees for much of their fuel. Recoverable energy could be a more appropriate term. At least 15% of what they combust is food waste that could instead be composted and reused as fertilizer. They burn valuable resources and I can’t help but think that we could produce more energy by conserving rather than combusting. It is like choosing between pulling the plug or turning off the faucet to lower the water level in a bath tub. Turning off the faucet has a less immediate effect, but the tub will never really be empty if you leave it on. I would much rather see comprehensive composting and reduction initiatives in my town than an incinerator. Until we change our minds over to a reusable mindset, this incinerator will keep on burning. Visiting this incinerator made me more proud than ever of the efforts we have taken this year to reduce our waste!

There you have it, the plastic footprint of 2 people and a big fluffy dog for the past month. It not pretty, and it reminds me of the places where I have been slacking (bread). There are too many bags this month, definitely something to be more aware of.

If you have been following us, you may know this already, but its been on my mind this week as I restocked out cleaning supplies toxicity. Most people out there are aware of BPA, or Bisphenol A. BPA mimics estrogen, a hormone linked to everything from fetal development to metabolism. Guys, this is not just a female thing, you have estrogen too! It is a key player in the maturation of your sperm and may even be necessary to have a healthy libido. It makes sense that we do not want BPA in our bodies messing with our development and a couple years ago there was a big push to get it out of our waterbottles. But did you know that BPA is still in the lining of most cans? (This is why I do not drink beer out of cans) You can find guides (like this one) online to help you identify companies that took the CPA out of their canned goods.

It not just BPA we need to think about. There are thousands of ill studied chemicals in the products we use such as detergents, soaps, household cleaners, toothpaste, shampoos, and other toiletries and cosmetics. This became increasingly apparent to me when my allergist told me that I was severely reactive to Thimerosal. Thimerosal is a mercury based preservative that was routinely used in childhood vaccines in the past but has fallen out of favor in recent years. It is 49% ethyl ethyl mercury, which is recognized as a potent neurotoxin. The FDA banned the sale of topically applied antibiotics containing thimerosal in the 1980s. Nevertheless, Brandon and I were able to identify it under different names in multiple products in our own bathroom!

Why are companies allowed to put harmful chemicals in our products? Shouldn we be able to trust them to do what is best for their customer health? The short answer to this question is no. Producers do not have to prove that a chemical is safe before putting it in their products. It is up to us to prove harm (which isveryhard to do!). Every day we are exposed to harmful chemicals in our household cleaners, toiletries, and many other products.

The best thing to do is to be as informed as possible and make the best choices for you and your family. So here are some resources to get you started!

WatchChemerical!. This documentary follows a family as they challenge themselves to rid their home of harmful chemicals. This ends up being a lot more challenging than they expect, but rewarding in the end. You can stream it on Netflix, check it out!

Lastly, I will share with you my recipe for our household all purpose cleaner. Last week Brandon was using it to clean our kitchen and couldn believe it was homemade! Not only is it way cheaper to make it yourself,it is also free from the harsh chemicals in factory made cleaners :O)

Combine 1 tsp. Borax, 1/2 tsp washing soda, 1 tsp of Dr. Bronners liquid castile soap, 2 cups of water, and essential oil as preferred (I used about a 20 drop combo of lavender and eucalyptus). Mix it up and you are done!

Titan, always down to get his face in our trash, has proven himself a converse uk great model, giving scope and scale to our monthly plastic piles. This one, as you can see, is huge compared to many previous months. It left us shaking out heads and vowing to do better next month. This is the point right? To see the damage we have done? It feels good to no poo!

2. Never again will we wash chemicals through our laundry again either because, quite frankly, soap nuts rule! We started using soap nuts in April and have been impressed by their natural ability to clean. In addition, we are thrilled at how long they last! I feel like our bag of soap nuts is just as full as when we got it in April. On the other hand, they still carted off a little more than 4 billion single use bags over the course of the year. That’s 316 bags per year for every man, woman and child in the province. And fewer than one in 12 of those bags found its way into a recycling program.

The figures were released by the Ontario Plastic Bag Reduction Task converse uk Group, representing retailers and recyclers, which struck a deal with the Ontario government in 2007 to slash converse uk the number of single use plastic bags handed out by 50 per cent by 2012.

Kim McKinnon, vice president of the Canadian Council of Grocery Distributors, hailed the reduction as a step forward. “We’re on target. We’re really happy,” she said.

McKinnon said she expects an even bigger drop when figures are reported for 2008, because retailers are making a concerted push to switch shoppers off plastic bags, and consumers are responding.

Stores are selling, or even giving away, reusable bags and bins; slapping stickers on bulky items instead of bagging them; and charging fees for single use bags.

The issue gained momentum in Toronto late last year when city council ordered stores in the city to impose a 5 cent fee on single us converse uk e plastic bags starting June 1.

Loblaws announced last month it would start charging a 5 cent fee immediately, matching the existing practice at several discount grocers.

The Toronto drive created some behind the scenes tension because the grocery distributors backed Toronto’s overall goal of slashing its garbage output by 70 per cent as of 2010 a more ambitious target than the 50 per cent bag reduction set by the province.

A new campaign encouraging households to reduce, reuse and recycle every day product packaging has been launched.

The Positive Package website, set up Waste Aware Scotland and funded by the Scottish Government, also provides advice, tips and information on how recycling can save natural resources and limite the amount of waste sent to landfill.

Initial activity of the campaign focuses on Easter egg packaging, pushing the message that in terms of packaging: ‘less is more this Easter’.

Launching the campaign at an Eco School in Perth, Minister for Environment Roseanna Cunningham said:

“I am delighted to help launch Waste Aware Scotland’s new campaign. Packaging is a key area in relation to waste. Some packaging helps converse uk protect products and can make them last longer, which can reduce waste. Equally, though, excess packaging is wasteful.

“The Scottish Government is supporting work on the reduction of unnecessary packaging and this campaign serves as a timely reminder of the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling packaging. Achieving a greener Scotland depends on all of us and will benefit us all too.”

This is a collaborative Entry sharing some ideas on how to avoid food waste, by using up leftovers or food which is close to the end of its useful life.

Waste is a mammoth problem. It is estimated that the average UK family throws out usable food worth 50 each month. The environmental impact of this is enormous, so it makes sense to take steps to reduce it.

ReduceThe best way to avoid waste is not to create it in the first place, so canny shoppers should plan their meals in advance, and only buy what they need. Don’t plan for a full week though, as there will always be times when something happens and you don’t need to cook that evening. Supermarkets’ BOGOF1 offers may look attractive, but they will only save you money if you are actually going to use them. A useful habit to learn is to do some early preparation with your shopping as soon as you get it home: wash and dry the salad leaves and keep them in a plastic container. Chop some vegetables: you can buy packets of ready chopped onion to keep in the freezer, but there’s no reason why you can’t replicate this time saver yourself at a fraction of the cost. Unwrap anything wrapped in plastic, and wash individual pieces of fruit so that they are ready to grab and go. If you’re very organised, write the use by dates on the items with a marker pen, so that it will be obvious which yogurt etc to use first. And put newer items at the back of the cupboard or fridge, bringing the older stuff forward.

But even the most organised households can find that they have some food that hasn’t been used as quickly as planned. Here are some suggestions for making use of any leftovers and foodstuffs beginning to show their age:

MeatRaw meat really needs to be used well before it starts to smell or turn green there’s no point risking food poisoning. Your fridge should be kept at a temperature of between 1 4Celsius, and raw meat should be kept well away from other foods, and used up quickly. If you know that you won’t be using that pack of mince or slab of chicken breasts in the next day or so, then stick them in the freezer now. Label and date them if you can spare 10 seconds, as that really does cut down on the amount of waste thrown out of the freezer as unidentifiable brown lumps.

Cooked meat is more versatile. A roast chicken can provide several meals: once the main roast has been eaten, strip the carcass and use the flesh in sandwiches, risotto or a curry. Boil the bones along with an onion, a bay leaf and some black pepper to make a chicken stock, and use that as the base for soup. Use whatever leftover veg you have from the roast, bearing in mind converse uk they won’t need much more cooking, or else raid the fridge for a couple of carrots that are starting to wilt, some potatoes which have begun to sprout eyes, an abandoned half cabbage, etc. Chop the veg small, simmer in the stock until cooked through, blend if desired, or keep chunky. Another option is to prepare ‘Monday Rice': cook some long grain rice in the juices and gravy left over from the Sunday roast, adding in small pieces of meat and the vegetables left over from that meal as well.

SaladBagged salad is one of the main culprits in the food waster’s home, as it has a shelf life of only a few days. Once it starts to wilt, liquidise any leftover green salady veg with a good glug of olive oil and some pine nuts for a pesto alternative to be stirred into cooked pasta. After a barbecue or party, blend any leftover salad along with its dressing to make a dip for tortilla chips or crudites. And you can make your own tortilla chips from leftover tortillas cut them into rough triangles, brush or spray lightly with a little oil, sprinkle on desired flavouring such as celery salt or paprika, and place them in a single layer on a baking tray. Pop in a hot oven for 10 minutes, or until crisp, but not burned.

Chopped tomatoes, spring onions, radishes can be added to a bowl of couscous for a meal in minutes. Larger tomatoes, sticks of celery or peppers can be stuffed with a rice mixture and baked.

Other VegetablesTomatoes that have lost their firmness can be chopped up and added to a pasta sauce, or sauted with a handful of prawns and a dash of chilli flakes for something rather special. Cold cooked potatoes can turn an omelette into a Spanish tortilla, or mixed with some mayonnaise for a potato salad. Leftover mashed potato can become Irish potato farl, or the classic bubble’n’squeak. Mashed potato can also be used to make potato croquettes2, or as a topping for a fish pie or individual cottage pies. Mash is also good for thickening soups and stews. Most other veg lends itself well to being transformed into soup. Freeze in individual portions for handy lunches. Don’t forget those labels!

HerbsFresh herbs add fantastic flavour to dishes, but packets of coriander, flat leaf parsley, and basil deteriorate really quickly. Pots of fresh herb last longer than the packets, but need to be kept watered. Herbs can be chopped and frozen in individual ice cubes ready to add to soups and stews, or can be added to a bottle of good olive oil to make a dressing for anti pasti grilled vegetables.

Half empty Tins and JarsSalsa sauce: remove any remaining shards of tortilla chip and use as a pasta sauce. A chopped hard boiled egg and some capers and black olives turn this into a tasty nioise sauce. Or spread over a pizza base and top with small pieces of cooked meats or thinly sliced veg, grated cheese and plenty of oregano, for a home made pizza.

Dairy ProduceTubs of cream cheese: mix with some fruit pure as an ice topping for buns and cakes. Mix with some chopped olives (the stuffed with pimento kind) and pile into celery sticks, then cut into bite size pieces for some colourful canaps.

Other cheeses can be combined to make a 2,3,4 or more cheese sauce to stir through pasta or pour over cooked cauliflower, broccoli or leeks. Or mix some chunks of cheese with other soft cooked vegetables such as butternut squash, sandwich between a pair of tortilla wraps and cook in a dry frying pan on both sides for quesadillas.

A surfeit of milk can be turned into pancake converse uk s. Sauces based on natural yogurt go well with grilled chops or hamburger steaks, while fruity yogurts make a good base for smoothies. Eggs nearing their use by date (which is printed on the shell in the UK) can still be hard boiled. A delicious sandwich filling can be made by mixing hard boiled egg with hummus instead of mayonnaise. You can store bread in the freezer and just defrost as required, though this is not great for sliced white loaves. Bread that is starting to lose its springiness is best combined with some slices of cheese in a toasted sandwich, or as French Toast.

If you have a glut of berries, combine them with the bread to make summer pudding, or for a winter warmer, make bread and butter pudding. Baguettes and ciabattas can go stale overnight, but can be revitalised as bruschetta. Cut into thick slices, rub with a garlic clove and a dr converse uk izzle of olive oil, bake under a grill for a few minutes, then top with sliced tomatoes, pesto, or a slice of Parma ham. Or make a French Bread Pizza. Stale bread can be whizzed into breadcrumbs and used to coat meat or fish, as a topping for macaroni cheese, or added to rissoles, meatballs or burgers.

Fruit That Isn’t BananasMake jam. Make a fruit coulis for pouring over ice cream or yogurt. Blend with some natural yogurt and a spoonful of honey for a breakfast smoothie. Freeze grapes and use them as a refreshing and lo cal3 alternative to boiled sweets.

Whole pineapples look very tempting in the shop, but it can be difficult to use such a large amount of fruit. Chop the leftover flesh with some fresh coriander and mint, add a drizzle of olive oil, the juice of a lime, a little caster sugar and black pepper to taste for a salsa to serve with grilled fish or meat.

Lemons and limes are often sold in nets of four or more. Cut those you won’t use immediately into slices or wedges and pop in the freezer in a see though freezer bag4. Instant ice’n’slice in one!

BananasThese are among the worst offenders when it comes to food waste, largely because of the reluctance of shoppers to buy bananas singly. Once the skins have begun to turn brown you have a choice: they can either be put in the freezer, or used up immediately.

To use up a banana right away, blitz it with the juice of a lime, a good glug of light rum, a spoonful of golden sugar and plenty of ice for a daiquiri. Or make muffins or banana bread. If you have some under ripe fruit or veg converse uk around, placing a banana with them will encourage them to ripen.

Once in the freezer the banana skin will continue to darken, but the flesh will remain as it was. Frozen bananas can be oven baked straight from the freezer and served with a dollop of ice cream5, a sprinkling of nuts, or a drizzle of alcohol. Or all three! If it’s summertime, you could barbecue them.

Leftover Wine (???)Some researchers swear that such a thing does indeed exist, and can be frozen in ice cube bags ready to be added to soups and stews. The rest of us are still laughing at the very notion.

The ScrapsPotato peelings, eggshells, heels of bread, etc can all be added to the compost heap. Scraps can be fed to your dogs, or to your backyard fox, but should be chopped into small pieces first. Don’t feed dogs onions, cooked bones, grapes or chocolate6, and don’t give them too much brassica vegetable.

Useful Things to HaveA voluminous freezer. Tubs or containers that can go in the freezer. Labels to go on the tubs that go in the freezer. Freezer bags. A hand blender. A large saucepan for making stocks and soups. A willingness to experiment.
